Wanna get something right, do it yourself

I've been having some issues with the internet speed since a couple of days. My download speed is beyond slow. I mean a download speed of less then 2Mbits/sec?!?!?!?!?! THAT IS SO 2000!!!!!!!!!!!!
Funny thing is, that the upload speed is fast.

So two weeks ago my new router and wireless access point arrived and all was working fine. Speed was very high, wireless signal very strong thru out the house. I could not ask for more ... besides world peace and cure for all diseases.

About 5 days ago, internet became slower and slower, up to the point were it was less then 2 Mbits/sec.

So, my thinking I configured the router and or wireless access point wrong. So I whipped out some CAT. 5 cables and tested the speed and it was as slow as wireless. Thus the problem was not with the WAP. Since it is a new router, I went thru the menu like a mad man, to see if it was some setting it set wrong.
Since I could not find any setting which could remotely explain the slowness, I restarted router and modem several times, leaving them off for an extended period of time before turning them on again. All to no avail :-(

So yesterday I called my ISP to see if there were some constructions going on my my area, or to see if I need to do something in the modem or report the MAC address of my router somewhere.
The friendly man on the other end of the phone, mentioned nothing needed to be done, when using a new router, and nothing was going on in terms of cable construction in my area. So he checked my modem, to see whether I was full of crap.

His conclusion: there is something wonky with my internet speed. So he suggested send a cable technician to check stuff.

That said, set cable technician rang my door bell this morning. So he whipped out some device and checked the cable coming into my house.
--> A-okay

Then he connected his laptop straight into the modem and used www.speedtest.net to see the download and upload speed.
--> A-okay

Then he connected my (brand new) router back into the modem, his laptop into my router and used www.speedtest.net again to test download and upload speed.
--> slow internet

Suggestion from cable technician reset router to default setting and try again. www.speedtest.net showed
--> slow internet

Thou this seems like a straight forward process, the technician spend almost 2 hours, cause he was fiddling with the laptop's ethernet port, took out a pcmcia ethernet card, tried that one, switched back and forth.

However I was at this point already before the techie wasted 2 hours. The only knowledge I gained was that the modem was working fine.

So, the techie decided that he found the root cause of my problem: the (brand new) router and he suggested I should be another brand. I friendly declined and mentioned I still have warranty on mine, thinking the dude is useless and wasted 2 hours of my time.

So this evening I collected my thoughts, reconfigured my router to my settings, considered the fact that the modem is working fine, and the premises that my router is working perfectly. This train of thoughts left only one possible item, that could cause the issue ... the ethernet cable from the modem to the router.

With this conclusion, I exchanged the cable with another cable and tested  up and download speed again ...LO AND BEHOLD ... Speed is up.

So I cut the connector I attached last time, and used another one, thinking I crossed wires or did something else wrong, but speed was still slow.
So I got my box of ethernet supplies and created a new cable ... A VIOLA

Fast as light!!! :-D

So long story short: do it yourself!
